Session 6 by Makino

Identify a story in your organization that helps explain issues that need to be addressed.

My story is about the innovation of using ICT in my organization. My organization used to be a traditional middle school. The leadership of it was not enlightened and had very traditional pedagogical perceptions. The school paid attention on promoting the whole score level of students and thought traditional instruction was a good enough way. So we had little imagination of ICT using in courses except a solo lantern slide machine in each classroom.

Then the educational official government offered a policy that the school must develop students’ comprehensive abilities besides studying the textbooks. So when some people from the educational official government come to inspect, we could get some experience of using ICT to support teaching and learning in courses. Teachers showed interesting story audio or movies to the students in the class. But most teachers just chose to use PPT and just clicked and spent a little time to explain the course. The teachers still preferred to using traditional pedagogy to teach students and made us to do many test every day after the inspectors left.

Then some students write letters to the official education government,  the official education government at last acquired our school to make innovation.  The ICT implementation of my high school then became better. It has introduced ICT into administration, teaching and learning and Internet technology is widespread among the campus. The school even organized a computer activity club, and teachers and students can all be a member of it. The principals have more initiatives and get to know that ICT literacy is very important to students and teachers.

The issues that need to be addressed is that there’re many difficulties in universalizing ICT implementation in the schools in mainland China. As China has the largest population in the world, we have to keep the college entrance examination system to select students. The content of the exam almost comes from the textbook. So reading and reciting the textbooks will be more important to the mainland students to reach a high mark in the exam. This kind of examination system will last for a long time, which stands in the way of the development of the ICT implementation in education. Under this educational system, principals and teachers would rather use the traditional pedagogy. My high school is one of the typical schools in mainland China. These schools are on the way to use ICT implementation in education. These schools get more and more ICT equipment and can keep the pace with the social updating ICT. More and more leaders and teachers become realize the important of ICT implementation and begin to make some changes of the traditional pedagogy.

  1. Makino,

I think putting too much emphasize on examination scores is not a particular situation in China as Hong Kong students also under great pressure in public examinations. Spoon feeding teaching not only making students lack of creativity but also for the teachers too. Using ICT in teaching can enhance student’s interest in learning as they are not only listening but also interactive with others. The study content may be same but the learning process would have more fun. On the other hand, people always reluctant to change as they are more familiar with the old way. This may due to a lack of security, they do not know what will come next after the changing. For example, teachers with less technical knowlegdes may scare elimination after the introduction of ICT. Thus, some of them may oppose to using ICT in teaching.

  2. Hi Makino
I think in some general middle school or high school in mainland China, it is a common sense that the school put all the focus on the scores of student, and they do not care the approached or facilities used in T and C procedure, they do not value the important of ICT, and they prefer to spend time in doing more exercise or remember some more new English word.

  3. To tell the truth, I think it is under the impact of the education system applied in mainland China, it seems that the NET means everything to everyone, including schools , parents, and of course students themselves. Maybe it is time for us to make some change now.
