Session 6 by Milky

Identify a story in your organization that helps

explain issues that need to be addressed

MILKY -session 6

I have been in Japan for more than half a year after my  university, and I had some work experience and I am really impressed by the Japanese people; conscientious professional working attitude,  responsibility to  work, enthusiasm thoughtful and considerate service. They are deserves to be the first ranking of service industry in the world. For one most simply example is the washroom in Japan, either in the senior office or the public street along street, whether  in the grand hotel or the small restaurant,as long as it is toilet, it would correspond to your demand to WC for clean and neat. When you come into the door, you will hear the words  of"いらっしゃいませ"(irashxyaimasei)which means welcome in Japanese. Meanwhile, immediately, you will have a sever comes to you in a smiling face and genial voice, to confirm about how many people you have , then you can choose to sit by counter or table, the smoking zone or the no-smoking zone. If you come by a rush hour, then you would be told how long you have to wait and if you want to wait here , if you say yes, then you could make a appointment and sit on the specified  bench to have a rest. And when you come to the table, you will get a piece of moist towelette from the sever, (and the towelette is warm in winter and cool in summer). If it is raining ,outside, they will put a eco-friendly membrane and put it on your wet umbrella while kneeling on the ground.
And if you do not know what to order, then would give you a real recommendation  which are really something popular in this place but not the most expensive one. In your dinner, they will ask you gently about whether the empty plates could be  swept off but not take them away without a word which would make you feel uncomfortable.  When you are about to leave, you will hear the words "ありがとうございます、ありがどうございました"”またよろしくお願いします”which means they are expressing the appreciation for you coming here and the expectation to your next visit, and this words could be heard in the whole stores in Japan as a service term. All in all, they will try their best to show the  respect, meticulous, consideration and understanding to customers. To ensure you could get a nice feeling when you are in their place. And I could
summarize it with one word-Awsome. They really did that they put the customers in the first place, do their best to meet the demand of  you. In addition,  the humane care behavior can be seen everywhere which make you moving, not only in the catering industry, and you will understand and have the same feeling as me when you come to Japan by yourself.
Another thing I want to share is about the working schedule in the stores,
in Japan, it is popular to do a part-time job when you are older than 18 years old, and no matter you are in a rich family or not, everyone prefers to work  themselves to obtain the things they want, and that make sense to their point of view, so the part-time young worker could be usually seen in every stores
So it is necessary for the boss to get a precise time schedule to their staffs, and this is called shift-system which means the staffs could choose the working day and hours by themselves one or two weeks before, and then the boss could make a decision about your final working time based on your time and other's time , of course also according to considering the requirement of the stores.

So this could make sense, and live in Japan , you must keep integrity, time concept is also important, if you can not go to work, then you must call ahead before it is too late for boss to find other take the place of you. When you work, you must be serious about what you are doing, no matter how tiny the things are ,including there is  a certain order and action when serving a dish and the chair and table ,even  the menu and tableware must be placed in a certain location. Everything is to make customers feel satisfied with the service here. You must keep smile, speak loudly, treat every customer with high tension,  and remember to say the words which have to say, and make sure everyone could hear you, these are what I was told in my shop when I was working there. Though sometime I feel tired of these little petty things, they are some kind of seriously overdone,
but when I think about it again, just because they have this spirit that make them become the world's NO.1 in service area. I really admire it and we can also learn something from the Japanese people in some degree.

    1. She has ever said that one big common issue is she had to finish every task, even which one is very very small. And once found not a hundred percent finished, the one will be blamed a lot. That may be a Japan culture.

  4. Your working experience is so interesting. However, do you feel that working in Japan is too harsh cos the employers are strict to their employees? What difference of working attitude between China and Japan you think?
