Session 2 by Cissy

Introduction
The “Model of Cultural Change in Schools” highlighted the need to accurately establish the existing culture of the school before any methodologies were applied. This was essential according to Drucker (1998, p. 3-5) who claimed that most organisations moved to correct the culture of the organisation, before they accurately established the assumptions on which the organisation had been built.
These were the assumptions that shaped the organisations behaviour, dictated its decisions about what to do and what not to do. To successfully carry out cultural change in an organisation, it was necessary to establish correct assumptions about the environment of the organisation, that included the society and its structures, the market, the customer and technology. In addition it was necessary to establish assumptions about the specific vision/mission of the organisation, as well as to establish correct assumptions about the core competencies needed to establish the organisation’s vision/mission (Drucker, 1998 pp.9-10).
Applying the model in Dongyang second senior high school
I’d like to take my high school as an example to analyze the changes of applying this model.
A brief introduction of school
This senior high school is a traditional exam-educational school, and it runs according to the local government policy. The teachers and students in this school pay most of the attention on how to improve scores rather than enhance the capacity. In other words, the dominant culture of this school is exam-oriented. The change from an exam-educational school to a quality-oriented school was on the initiative of local government. In order to meet requirement of the local government, the school take measures to change the school culture and create a different learning atmosphere for students.
Diagnostic survey identifies perceived shortcoming
The survey is simply and relatively small-scale on account of shortcoming is obvious. Students are mainly focused on exams and other capacity has been ignored for a long time.
Dialogue, Scenario Analysis and Learning Histories
The dialogues are mainly between president and teachers as the goal of making efforts to help students pass college entrance examination is unchangeable. By scenario analysis, only some activities which takes up a small amount of time can be add into the schedule to change the situation.
New School Culture established focused on continuous improvement and better able to cope with change
Sunshine Physics education and manual class are the new elements in daily live in school. Sunshine Physics education aims to improve the level of fitness. And manual class make students have basic life skills, for instance, change a light bulb. These two activities are not related to exams, and focus on the capacity of students. To some extent, the arrangement eases tensions of students.
Conclusion
The change or the reform in the school is not thoroughly. Honestly speaking, the change is in order to cater to the decision of local government, and the change can not last a long time. It all depends on the education system of China. Any reform or change will end up with failure if we could not change the system.
