Session 1 by Vanice

Report on your present or previous experiences in the workplace. How best would you describe how your organisation learns?
Maintain workplace safety is the shared vision of my company. There are trainings and communicate sessions help to remind staff’s about the importance of safety workplace.

At personal level, to remind our staffs about the safety rules and requirements in our company, all staffs and contractor company staffs who need to work in site need to attend a safety course. If they fail the course, they are not allowed to work in our site and they also need to attend refresher course after completion of the last course for certain years. Staffs can also visit the company library to obtain safety related materials for self studies.

At branch level, there will be a monthly team briefing which aims to bring the staffs together to discuss about any current workplace hazards and provide suggestion to avoid it.

On departmental level, there will be monthly safety talk held by our safety department to discuss about the workplace injured cases of the month and other site incidents in Hong Kong to both our staffs and contractor company staffs. Safety officer will also share about how to avoid these accidents and report the accident investigation.
Furthermore, regular safety visits by safety officers to check any potential hazards at our sites or unsafe site operations. All the NC case will share in the safety talk.

Team learning, one of the key disciplines of organizational learning suggested by Peter Senge, is achieved through the sharing and discussion between staffs and company management.
My workplace does well in the team learning, but less successful in providing resources for self learning. For example, though we have a library for staff to enhance their work related knowledge, the library operation is not coordinate with patron’s use. For most of the staffs, they need to work during the working hours and thus they would most probably visit the library during the lunch hours. However, the library does not open at the lunch hours due to a lack of manpower and thus the library utility rate is low. The learning resources cannot be reached by the staffs when they needed and thus affects the performance of organization learning.

  1. Hi Vanice:
Thank you for sharing how your organization learns. You have talked about the training and sessions about the importance of safety workplace and you told in 3 levels. After reading, I think the personal level is about learning and the other 2 are about discussion. So why don't your organization combine the 2 level together? And what's role does your management play in this organizational learning? Thank you!!!
